The Newport Hotel is an iconic pub in Fremantle. Everyone seems to have a story or experience from this 120 year old historic venue. The owners were keen to update the lower level of the pub, add a commercial kitchen to create great food, and develop the old accommodation rooms upstairs for activity based events and hire. The old toilets on both levels were also in need of a complete renovation.
As the building is heritage listed, all works had to be reviewed and approved by Fremantle’s Heritage Council. This meant significant research to determine what was original and what had been added over the many years of repairs. It was important to be sensitive to the original building and protect original features while ensuring a seamless integration with the new design. To add to the challenge, the pub needed to stay open for business during the course of works.
Although there were obstacles to overcome and battles to be fought, Stiely Design was able to deliver a new and fresh venue that not only increased the revenue of the pub but also brought in a new type of clientele, where everyone feels comfortable and can enjoy a great night out.
